La Orquídea Negra (Encyclia Cochleatum) es la Flor Nacional
de Belice. Esta orquídea crece sobre árboles en áreas húmedas, y florece en
todas las estaciones del año. Su tamaño varía hasta 6 pulgadas de longitud.
La orquídea negra tiene sus pétalos de color amarillo
verdoso con manchas moradas cerca de la base. El "lip" (un pétalo de
especial construcción, el cual es el que menos se ve de la flor) posee forma
semejante a una válvula de almeja (de aquí el nombre de Encyclia Cochleatum) y
posee en su profundidad manchas carmelitas, además de negras.
The Black Orchid (Encyclia Cochleatum) is the National Flower of Belize. This orchid grows on trees in in wet areas and blooms in all seasons. Their size varies up to 6 inches long.
The black orchid has its petals greenish-yellow with purple spots near the base. The "lip" (one petal of special construction, which is the least seen of the flower) has shaped like a clam valve (hence the name Encyclia Cochleatum) and has in its depth Carmelite spots plus black.
Árbol / Tree
El árbol de la caoba (Swietenia Macrophilla) es uno de los
árboles magnificentes y gigantes de la floresta. Se erige recto y alto
alcanzando los cien pies desde la raíz a la copa, sobresale por encima de los
otros árboles que le rodean. El árbol de la caoba forma parte del Escudo de
Armas de Belice. El lema "Sub Umbra Florero" significa: Bajo la
sombra (del árbol de la caoba) Yo florezco.
El árbol de la caoba madura entre los 60 y 80 años. Los
negociantes británicos explotaron los bosques de caoba, comenzando alrededor de
la mitad del siglo 17. Originalmente las exportaciones se realizaban al Reino
Unido en forma de listones cuadrados.
The Tree of mahogany (Swietenia Macrophilla) is one of the magnificent and gigantic trees of the forest. It stands straight and tall, reaching a hundred feet from the root to the crown, protrudes above the other trees around you. The mahogany tree is part of the Coat of Arms of Belize. The motto "Sub Umbra Vase" means: Under the shade (mahogany tree) I flourish.

Ave / Bird
El Ave Nacional es el Tucán de Pico Agudo (Ramphastos
sulfarantus). El Tucán se conoce por su pico grande con forma de canoa y sus
plumas de color encendido verde, azul, rojo y anaranjado.
El Tucán, en su mayor parte, es de color negro con las
mejillas y el pecho de color amarillo encendido, rojo bajo la cola y una mancha
blanca distintiva en la base de su cola.
Puede tener hasta 50 milímetros de longitud. En todo el
país, el Tucán habita en áreas abiertas con árboles grandes. Ponen hasta cuatro
huevos que se incuban por ambos padres. Anidan en agujeros en los árboles
usando agujeros naturales o hechos por pájaros carpinteros.
The national bird is the Pico Agudo Toucan (Ramphastos sulfarantus). The Toucan is known for its large beak-shaped canoe and feathers on green, blue, red and orange.
The Toucan, for the most part, is black cheeks and chest on yellow, red under the tail and a distinctive white patch at the base of its tail.
You can have up to 50 millimeters in length. Across the country, the Toucan inhabits open areas with large trees. They lay up to four eggs which are incubated by both parents. They nest in holes in trees or using natural holes made by woodpeckers.
Animal
El Tapir o Vaca de montaña (Tapirello Bairdii) es el más
grande mamífero terrestre del trópico americano. El Tapir es de constitución corpulenta
con patas cortas, alcanza el tamaño de un burro y llega a pesar hasta 600
libras. Por lo general su color es carmelita oscuro con unos mechones de pelos
blancos alrededor de los ojos y bordes, y ocasionales manchas blancas en la
piel sobre el cuello y pecho. El Tapir no es una vaca pese a su nombre local.
Está más cercano al caballo y al tipo de los rinocerontes.
El tapir es vegetariano. El dedica mucho de su tiempo a permanecer metido en el
agua o fango, y es un fuerte nadador. El animal nacional está protegido por las
leyes de Belice y la caza del tapir es ilegal.

Usually its color is dark brown with a few strands of white hair around the eyes and edges, and occasional white spots on the skin over the neck and chest.
