Belize (or Belize,) is a country located in Central America, specifically in the extreme northwest, bordered to the north and Mexico to the south and west by Guatemala. Its capital is Belmopan, but the larger population and urbanization is located in Belize City, the ancient capital. The name of this country is not clear, although most theories point to be of Maya origin. The first record of the name is found in the chronicles of Dominican priest Father Jose Delgado, dating from 1677. Delgado scored the names of the three major rivers that crossed during the journey north along the Caribbean coast: river Soyte , Xibum river and river Balis. These names, which correspond to the sitee, Sibun and Belize rivers, were provided to Delgado for his translator. Probably Balis was actually the Mayan word belix (or beliz), meaning 'slimy, watered'.

Belize is the only country in Central America where the official language is English, as this is the only country that was invaded by British colonial conquerors. However, the predominant languages are being Spanish and Belizean Creole, becoming the English the predominant language than 3% of population.
